The first download is for anyone using a Debian based distro, such as Debian, Ubuntu, Dreamlinux, Linux Mint or MEPIS (for examples).  The second download is the source package, for use in Slackware Linux or .rpm based distros, such as Fedora, Mandriva, or PCLinuxOS to name a few.

This second download is for a more advanced package that is intended to address the 'whole shebang' that my first GDM tutorial explains.  This comes from the GDM2 setup team at Launchpad.net (thank you!)  There are a few bugs to still be worked out but these are already being addressed and will be updated from the repository.  If you have not already done so, take the time to visit the tutorial on how to add this package to the repository.  This is important because then you will get updates via your update manager application and there will be some as the bugs get worked out of this new application.  The first option is for Debian based distros; the second download is the source code option for all other distros.
